Understanding the importance of step lifts

16 July 2011

A step lift is a device that allows people in wheel chairs to go over vertical heights such as steps by elevating the wheelchair (with the passenger in it) over the obstacle. This makes it easier for such people to access areas that they otherwise would not be able to. Today, the rights of the disabled need to be respected and every effort made to protect these rights. This means that such individuals should have access to the same resources as the non-disabled, and the step lift is one way in which this is achieved.

A step lift can be used in instances where building a ramp may not be feasible. This may be due to several reasons, such as aesthetics or functionality. For instance, if the height of the steps is too high or there is not enough room to make a long ramp, building a short ramp could result in the ramp being very steep. This would make it very difficult for people on wheelchairs to get over the ramp. Today, one can find out more about step lifts on the internet. People responsible for making public buildings more accessible to disabled people therefore have a choice when it comes to choosing the right step lift, in terms of quality and price. This is yet another reason why all public buildings should have these facilities.
