Demystifying the adjacent access vertical platform lift

19 January 2012

Basically, a vertical platform lift enables users to connect to various elevation levels in a building. In a residential building setting, these mobility devices are normally found at the entrance of a house.  Due to space unavailability, most houses have narrow, steep and often difficult to navigate stair cases, especially the front stairs. To ease navigation problems in these types of homes, especially for the elderly or disabled members of a family, a wheel chair lift or a vertical platform lift as it is often called can adequately bridge this handicap, thereafter being able to enjoy the wished for freedom of movement.

The available vertical platform lifts provide its users with what is generally referred to as straight-through access or adjacent access. The different type of access relates to the way a user enter or exit the mobility device. This is one of the main considerations to make prior to purchasing any sorts of a lift, mainly because they must be configured by the manufacturer so as to operate either way. Adjacent access is when you enter a vertical platform lift and then turn ninety degrees to the left or the right to exit the lift-similarly to how you exit a motorcar. This setup saves quite a bit of space for the building owner.
