DDA Lifts – Making Life Better For The Disabled

09 December 2011

DDA

DDA stands for Disability discrimination act. It was reinforced in order to make life easier for the disabled in the public. According to the act, discrimination against the disabled is a punishable crime. It is essential for all public places to make provision to include DDA lifts in which the disabled travel to different floors of the building. All public buildings have to modify their infrastructure without discriminating a person based on his physical ability or gender. Places that are included under this act are schools, offices, entertainment centers, shops, restaurants and hotels.

What are the specifications of DDA?

Under DDA, all public places have to provide wide doors and pathways so that the disabled can easily use the wheelchair in these places. Ramps have to be installed in the entrance and wherever stairs are provided. The provision of a ramp and wheelchair is not subject to the height to be traversed. They are necessary in all places. Several building have had to make changes in their premises in order to accommodate these conditions. Nevertheless, the provision has been a huge advantage for the disabled because they can now access any public place with as much freedom and ease as the others.
