DDA lifts: Devices to protect the rights of the disabled

16 July 2011

In order to ensure that the rights of disabled people aren’t violated, many companies today have adopted the DDA legislation. DDA stands for Disability Discrimination Act, which was put in place in 1995. This legislation requires that all companies that are service providers should have in place mechanisms that allow the disabled to get around more easily in the building or office. This protection is not just for individually who are physically challenged and include people who have other disabilities such as visual and auditory limitations as well.

Although the DDA is legislated, currently it is more of a suggestion than a legal obligation. Whatever the case, it still makes sense for anyone who owns a company or institution that serves the public to have such devices. For instance, DDA lifts should be installed in the same area that normal lifts are located. The DDA lifts can be used by the disabled who are unable to use ordinary lifts. Vendors for such lifts can easily be found online, and making a decision to install such lifts is not difficult. At the end of the day, these very special individuals have rights too, so everyone should make an effort to protect these rights as well.
