A short introduction to dumb waiters

14 July 2011

Dumb waiters are a type of lifts that enables one to transport items rather than people between floors. Under normal circumstances, a dumb waiter is used to cover short distances, such as between several floors. However, there are some special dumb waiters that can be used to transfer goods over much larger distances. Normally, dumb waiters are very compact as compared to normal elevators, and most can’t even fit in a fully-grown human being.

The applications for dumb waiter are only limited by one’s imagination. For instance, some houses use dumb waiters to transfer laundry from the floors above to the laundry room in the basement and vice versa. Also, hotels use dumb waiters to transport food from the kitchen to the upper floors, which is perhaps where the name “dumb waiter” originated from. If you intend to install such a device in your home, the one thing that you should never skimp on is quality. This is because it is a major investment; and it is likely that your home will be restructured so as to fit in this new addition. The cost of doing all this means that you can’t afford to have a dumb waiter that is of poor quality or that is installed improperly.
